Bike to Work Week!?!

Day 2098

Oh, the irony! Being a somewhat regular bicycle commuter, even to work, I was surprised to learn this morning that May 17 – 21 was Bike to Work Week and today, the 21st, is Bike to Work Day.

The irony is that while I did pedal my ass to work Wednesday and Thursday, I didn’t today – for a very specific reason. I’m kinda bummed too, because it looks to be another gorgeous day shaping up here in Camp Rachacha (it does too sound like Rochester!) and I could always use just one more cardio workout.

I’m off to the Al Anon convention in Owego this weekend. Looks like I’ll be going stag too. I had planned on taking my laptop so I could surf/blog/kill time during some of the down time we’ll have. Because of my biking situation, I prefer to not carry my laptop with me on my bike. I don’t have a suitable rack, I really don’t want to put it in my back pack, and the carrying case it came in just isn’t feasible. I tremble at the thought of my data taking a tumble off my bike while going downhill at 30+mph. Too much data to lose.

So. Anytime I know I need to transport my ‘puter, I drive. It’s for the good of the data people. There’s nothing left for me to do but blame the Al Anon Convention for me missing out on the culmination of Bike to Work Week. If I have time, maybe I’ll head out for a little spin tonight.

What I really ought to do is create a reminder for myself. A little calendar teaser to remind me when Bike to Work Week is next year. Then maybe I an help promote it a little bit. But really – anytime is a good time to leave the car in the garage (carport, driveway, parking spot, what ever . . .) and pedal our asses to work. Saves gas, provides exercise, and gives you an excuse to NOT take work home with you – no where to carry it!!

I’ve been to several Al Anon conventions over the last 2 – 3 years, and even attended the local AA shindig in March. Maybe it was one of those? This is my first visit to this town, which probably rivals your town for size. The big employer is a Lockheed Martin plant and I think that’s it. Maybe a college nearby. Kickin’ town.
